Happy driving with Edwige, your new road companion!

I am unable to download the Edwige application on my smartphone: what can I do?

The Edwige application is compatible with Android 5 and iOS 11 and later versions.

If you have an older version, you’ll need two numbers in case you have problems on the main roads in Wallonia:

  • 101, in case of breakdown (regardless of whether you are insured).
    • 101 is the number for SIABIS, the computer platform that organises the transfer of information required for breakdown assistance. This system identifies the mechanic who is able to attend most quickly, based on the location of the incident.
  • 112, in case of distress.

How do I register?

It’s really easy to register with Edwige:

  • Download the application:
    • in the Google Store
    • in the Apple Store
  • Open the application
  • Click on ‘Register’
  • Fill in the details of your vehicle(s), or click on ‘Complete’

You are now connected to Edwige! You will be sent a confirmation email to confirm your registration. You have up to 30 days to confirm your account; after this time, it will be automatically deleted.

Happy driving with Edwige, your new road companion!

Can I use Edwige without registering?

Yes. Registration is not mandatory to use Edwige. However, we encourage every user to register with the application, in order to add as much information as possible to your profile (make and model of the vehicle, registration number, assistance number, etc.).

This information offers several benefits in the event of a breakdown:

  • It allows the breakdown services to attend more quickly. In fact, in addition to the geolocation provided by the application, information regarding your vehicle will help the teams sent to the site to identify you more quickly.
  • By clicking the ‘breakdown’ button, you will be connected to the PEREX centre (traffic-monitoring and management centre), which will verify whether or not you have breakdown cover using your registration number. The PEREX centre will then arrange the necessary intervention with your assistance.

How can I use Edwige safely?

The application must only be used by a driver when the vehicle is stationary or by a passenger. Safety information appears when using the application, notably this message: ‘If you are the driver, only interact with Edwige if you are stationary.’ There are also instructions for safely installing your mobile phone in the passenger compartment.

In addition, when registering, the General Conditions of Use must be accepted. They contain, notably in Article 4.8, the sentence above, as well as a request to comply with the obligations arising from the Highway Code.

What if I don’t have a smartphone?

If you don’t have a smartphone, but you do have a mobile phone, you’ll need two numbers in case you have problems on the main roads in Wallonia:

  • 101, in case of breakdown (regardless of whether you are insured).
    • 101 is the number for SIABIS, the computer platform that organises the transfer of information required for breakdown assistance. This system identifies the mechanic who is able to attend most quickly, based on the location of the incident.
  • 112, in case of distress.

If you don’t have a smartphone or a mobile phone, the Edwige application also offers all users the option of reporting any incident they have observed on their journey to the PEREX centre (traffic-monitoring and management centre). This means that, if a user sees a car that has broken down, they can report this via the Edwige application so that the necessary interventions can take place.

What happens if there is no internet connection?

When the user has no internet connection, they can click a red 112 button if urgent assistance is required, or a green help button if the user has already saved the assistance number in their profile.

Why is Edwige telling me the service is unavailable in this area?

If Edwige is telling you the service is unavailable in the area you are located, this means that you are not in an area covered by Edwige. In this case, the application will suggest you contact 112 in case of distress, or call your breakdown-assistance number if you have previously saved this.

The application’s features are enabled when you travel on the main roads in Wallonia (all motorways and the main national roads). For more details of the network covered by the application, click here.

What area is covered by Edwige?

The application is active on all motorways in Wallonia and on the main national roads, representing a network of approximately 1,300 kilometres. The detailed map of the roads is available here.

What happens outside of the network covered by Edwige?

When the user is outside the network covered, they can click a red 112 button if urgent assistance is required, or a green help button if the user has already saved the assistance number in their profile.

Why are the refuge areas being removed?

The reasons for removing the refuge areas are as follows:

  • Use of the refuge areas intended to connect users experiencing a breakdown to the PEREX centre has decreased in recent years: in 2018, 1,181 calls were made and 837 were made in 2019 (just over two calls per day on average). Yet, the budget to maintain and repair these areas is not insignificant (approximately 1 million euros per year).
  • Therefore, the traffic mangers have decided to offer a solution suited to users’ new habits, as most people now have a smartphone and applications. In addition, they waited for the penetration rate of smartphone usage to be high before putting this project in motion.

What will happen to the refuge areas?

They will gradually be covered from mid-July. A working group is discussing the issue of their disassembly and their future.

We will obviously keep you up-to-date on this matter.
